The 52 popsicle project is an attempt to find my culinary voice through specificity. It is also exactly what it sounds like: me, crafting one popsicle recipe a week for a year. Will there be citrus? Certainly. Will there be holiday themed popsicles? Absolutely. I love popsicles and I love projects. My first food based project took place in 2012. I received Martha Stewart’s cupcake book for my birthday in winter, and by the time summer had arrived, some mixture of boredom, love for baking, and quest for purpose (it was an Olympics summer…the kind of ad-based, heat drenched time when you feel inadequate) led me to cook as many cupcakes as I could in the span of three months. There were failures, messes, too-melty thin frosting, too-cold thick frosting and a lot of carbs. I showed up to no event empty handed and had no shortage of tasks to fill my days. That is the fulfillment I am looking for with the 52 popsicle project. I outlined the idea for this venture as my final project for a food writing class the spring of my junior year of college. The popsicle project lasted from June 2018 through June 2019. It then became the pie project, a similar mission with a different medium. The project itself lives on this blog and is shared through a weekly newsletter. Each week I hope to learn something new and remember something past. Crafting a popsicle (and now, a pie) will hopefully become more than simply mixing liquids and then freezing them...though it definitely will be that. Thanks for being part of the project!
